Resilient ports run on a shared operational picture

What conversations at the IHMA Congress 2026 in Rotterdam revealed about resilient ports.

Back from Rotterdam, and reflecting on an inspiring week at the IHMA Congress 2026. The 15th International Harbour Masters’ Association Congress brought harbor masters, port authorities, technology providers and maritime stakeholders together under the theme Connecting Horizons – Building Future Resilient Ports Together — and that theme ran through many of the conversations we had across the event.

A common thread emerged across ports of different sizes, geographies and operational models. As maritime operations become increasingly interconnected, resilience depends on the ability of harbor masters, VTS operators, pilots, service providers and port authorities to work from a shared operational picture in real time.

That shift may sound subtle, but its impact is significant. Better alignment supports safer operations, more effective decision-making and stronger responses to disruption.

A shared, real-time picture is exactly what a smart port human-machine interface is built to deliver: a single operational view that connects people, processes and technology around what is happening now and what happens next.

“Thank you to everyone who took the time to share experiences and perspectives during the congress. The conversations reinforced something we strongly believe: resilient ports are built when people, processes and technology operate from the same understanding of what is happening now and what happens next.”
