AI in pilotage and safety-critical operations

A highlight of the week for Tidalis came on Tuesday 20 October, the convention’s opening day. Pavel Skournik, Managing Director Americas at Tidalis, spoke on the role of Artificial Intelligence in pilotage and other safety-critical operations.

The talk built on the perspective Tidalis shared at the IMPA Congress 2026 in Bali in August. AI creates real opportunities to improve situational awareness and decision-making. In safety-critical work, its value lies in supporting the expertise and judgment of pilots, not replacing them.

Meeting the US pilotage community

The APA has represented the piloting profession in the United States since 1884. Its member pilot groups handle the vast majority of ocean-going vessels moving through US waters. That makes the biennial convention one of the most important gatherings for anyone working on the future of pilotage in the Americas.

During the Suppliers’ Exhibition, the Tidalis team met pilots and industry partners at Booth 11. Conversations covered innovation, digital solutions and what comes next for maritime pilotage. Tidalis supports marine pilot organizations worldwide with solutions such as pilot dispatching.
